White Rock Mountain, Winslow, AR | October 2010
I found myself alone on White Rock Mountain at a critical juncture in my life, both personally and professionally.
This was 2010. Life was not handing me the hand that was planned at 49. I needed to get away to think. I’d spent various times at White Rock Mountain throughout my life. Cabin B, White Rock Mountain Campground, was a big part of my life but the beginning of something even bigger for the remainder of my life.
By that time in my life, I’d owned businesses, run businesses for other owners, worked in accounting, sales, and technology. I had learned a lot in my early career from one of the most fantastic companies that I was blessed to be a part of in the tire industry – so many great people.
Pondering many points in my life personally and professionally that time at White Rock had one question that nagged me throughout my stay at Cabin B. “What’s been the biggest problem in business during your whole career?”
The question dogged me. I thought I knew the answer to that question. I just wasn’t sure about the solution. I concluded that the most important piece of a business is the organization’s revenue generation model. Not an epiphany by any stretch, but it pointed me to pursue another daring journey.
Historically, the biggest problem in every business I’d been part of – large and small, whether technology or tires – was this: Forecasting what a sales team would do in any given quarter was akin to planning your day around the horoscope. Last quarter’s horoscope! And tracking sales activity in real time? Forget about it.
Cloud-based Customer Relationship Management changed all that.
Salesforce was already the indisputable, defining product for cloud-based CRM. In the year after that fateful visit to White Rock Mountain, I invested 20, 30, sometimes 40 hours a week into learning Salesforce and using it to make my company’s revenue generation model forecastable, trackable, and measurable.
Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” That year and that visit to Cabin B, led me to start a company that would be the change in the business world I wished to see.
I named that company, WhiteRock.
